Note that they were likewise resentful of the US gov paying out reparations to the interned Japanese and to the wronged native Americans, but gov officials pushed those equally controversial policies through anyway and made those people whole.
You don't kowtow to the butthurt emotions of the bad guys and coddle them. That makes you a coward.
